One of the pain of dining in Kuala Lumpur is that you can rarely get any fresh seafood. Being located so far off shore, our fresh fish will most likely taste like frozen fish for folks in Klang, Kota Kinabalu etc. I had a chance to dine out at Brolly which is located at Menara Felda, Persiaran KLCC. This pork-free joint, Brolly is a collective of nine kitchens Crab Factory, Ember & Bara BBQ, Raksasa Mirai, Nove 9 Pizzeria, Moley’s Oyster Bar, Bang Bang Baller Bar, My Wing Man, Variety Nible Nible Nible and Sweet Endings – which means their customers will get to satisfy their cravings in 9 different ways.
Brolly have a very interesting interior and exterior design. You can see tyres, rims and other cars related accessories being used as decors here. The place is comfortable and welcoming. Definitely a place where you can hang out with your friends for a long time.
One of the most unique feature about Brolly is their live tank. It is common to see live tanks in restaurants around KL or Selangor, however Brolly’s live tank features the most exquisite seafood you can’t find in any live tanks around here such as Oysters and Brown Crabs.
It is definitely a surprise to see live oysters in their live tanks. We definitely can expect one of the freshest oysters in Kuala Lumpur in this way. However, that’s not all that was offered here at Brolly.
I’m not an alcohol person and I’m definitely not a beer person as well. However, I absolutely adore the beergaritas offered here. Do give them a try if you like sweet alcohol like I do.
This salad is dressed with honey vinegar and it definitely is a good starter dish with its slight sourish and sweet taste.
This is your typical Caesar Salad BUT, the lettuce were lightly grilled over open fire to give it a little smoky flavour.
If you are looking for interesting pizzas to try, look no further than Brolly. Their pizzas were made into oval shape and I particularly like the Thai Beef Guava Salad pizza. The pizzas here are delicious and their crust were crispy with the right texture.
Cencaluk is a type of paste made of fermented krills or small shrimps which usually are salty and slightly sour. This Cencaluk Chicken Wings taste awesome and the crispy outer layer with tender meat on the inside can match any of the best fried chicken you can find in Kuala Lumpur.
For those who enjoys deep fried onions, don’t miss this one out either as the onion was fried to golden brown while the layers within are still crisp.
The beef was cooked to perfect medium rare and served with Cajun style sauce. The mash potato are freshly made and you can still get chunks of potato within.
The ultimate beer food is none other than fried calamari rings, well in this case fried calamari tentacles. The calamari tentacles were cooked to perfection with a nice chewy texture and the outer layer was crispy as well. This dish is so addictive, you just can’t stop eating it.
There are wide selection of grilled food here at Brolly but the one that takes the cake is definitely their smoked duck. The meat was cooked perfectly. It is tender, juicy and moist. The outer layer is slightly crispy and we just can stop eating this. It is a pity that we had to share this dish, I definitely wish I can have this all to myself.
When a restaurant owns a live tank, you can expect the freshest seafood. Although, that might not be the case for some restaurants especially when they kept their seafood in poor condition. That’s not the case at all for Brolly.
The crabs are succulent and packed with meat without any hint of fishiness. The crab meat did not break apart easily – which meant it is fresh and the sweetness of the crab meat are very apparent. There are different types of cooking you can choose from at Brolly which are mustard, garlic butter, gardlic aoili, zesty lemon, signature southern bang and jamba-jamba but the ones we absolutely adore is their Signature Southern Bang.
The sauce is spicy and sour at the same time which is very appetising. If you like spicy food like I do, you will definitely enjoy this as much as I do. You can even add in bag buddies (potatoes, chicken sausages,king mushrooms, corn, enoki mushrooms and button mushrooms) to fully enjoy the sauce of your choice.
We also have a chance to enjoy the brown crab – which are rarely served by restaurants in Malaysia as the crabs were mainly found around the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Seas. It is a seafood that can only be enjoyed in European countries.
When I mentioned that you can get the freshest oyster in Kuala Lumpur in the title, I meant every word of it. The oysters are so darn fresh, you can’t even taste any hint of fishy smell on it. I dislike oysters to be honest but I think I wouldn’t mind gobbling this whole platter on my own. The silky and soft oysters were as if they melted as soon as they touched my tongue. I tried oysters from several restaurants and hotels which are well known for their oysters but none can compare to Brolly’s. In fact, Caroline, like myself who are not at all fond of oysters enjoyed the oysters from Brolly as much as I did. She mentioned that the oysters tasted almost the same as the oysters she had in Kaoshiung that were freshly caught from the sea. Till today, I am not aware of any other restaurants that kept their oysters in their live tanks but I guess this is the reason why the oysters at Brolly tasted so damn good.
Besides the oysters and the crabs, other seafood in Brolly are equally fresh as well. If you fancy some seafood and would like to experience Louisiana style seafood for once, Brolly will be a good choice.
Brolly have several interesting desserts nicely placed in mason jars. My favourite of them all will be the Rocky Road and Creme Brulee. I find the Creme Brulee to have a very smooth and silky texture, however I felt the layer of hard caramel on top are not enough to go with the rest of the cream.
The grilled montel banana parcel and grilled green pear parcel are some of the very unique desserts offered at Brolly as well. The desserts have a strong cinnamon scent and if you like sourish dessert, you should try the grilled green pear parcel.
If you are looking for a place in Kuala Lumpur that offers you a wide variety of food with many choices of flavour and cuisine, Brolly is a choice that you can never go wrong. Especially if you like oysters.
