Ninetology U9X1 VS Samsung Galaxy S3

Recently, I participated in one of Ninetology’s program which is called the Tech Kaiju Project. I was loaned two units of smartphones, the Ninetology U9X1 and also the Samsung Galaxy S3. In this blog post, I will do a comparison between these two phones but it will be more on a rough review of the Ninetology U9X1 as I previously done a Galaxy S3 review before which you can read it here.

Let’s get started on this review right here with unboxing of both phones shall we?

I will give it to Ninetology this round. Although I don’t fancy giant boxes but the extra casing appeals a lot to me. I hate to be spending more on casing or accessories after purchasing my phone. This is a good move to keep me interested with the phone.

Both are in the perfect sizes for me and they come with Super AMOLED HD as well which means their screen are guaranteed to be vivid. This is definitely a tie.

In terms of build quality, the U9X1 definitely lacks behind the S3. The battery cover felt a bit more flimsy and it seems like they need to work a little more on casing design so their devices could fit with minimal joint lines visibility. For me, the battery cover never seems to fit perfectly in visual although it already is.

In terms of design, both came in a draw where materials played an important role. Although the material used in X1 wasn’t as good as S3’s, I still like glossy black material. But in my honest opinion, I felt it is time for mobile phone manufacturers to move away from plastic and try to venture into other materials like metal, acrylic or even kevlar?

Now comes into one of the most considered specs for a smartphone which is the camera. On printed materials, X1 seems to have an edge over the S3 since it is using a 13 MP camera while S3 has its 8 MP camera. Now, most gadget enthusiasts know that having a bigger megapixel count doesn’t really brings you good quality images. Let’s take a look at the results from these two cameras.

Although I didn’t include in the low light shot of the S3, I wouldn’t say it will be better than the X1. But the X1 doesn’t seems to shoot too well in the dark. Overall for daylight and also macro, the S3’s camera have an edge over the X1. The colors are much more accurate and noise count is visibly lower.

User Interface (UI) and Operating System

When it comes to UI, Samsung Galaxy S3 is using their TouchWiz UI while Ninetology made minimal changes to the stock Jelly Bean UI. This will affect the user experience and also how well the OS runs on these phones. After a week of usage, these are some of the quick findings from both phones.

Contrary to what most people think, the Android OS is not as laggy as it was perceived. This is because most people are taking the Samsung Galaxy TouchWiz UI, their modified Android UI, as a benchmark and this is quite inaccurate. The TouchWiz (TW) UI by Samsung indeed packs a lot of features and for me, too many features. It makes the whole system seems laggy and drains a lot of battery. I had to off a bunch of functions just to save battery consumption. Now what good is a phone’s features when you had to keep them off most of the time? Some typical crashes in launching heavy apps.

The UI from Ninetology pretty much sticks a lot to its original Android UI and it works. Smooth and fluid like how they should be. Never had any crashes loading heavy apps and gameplay seems smooth as well. I will definitely go for Ninetology for this feature.

However, if you like your phone to be packed with features, and sometimes features you do not need, Galaxy S3 might appeal to you. For me, I rather have less unnecessary features on my phone. It prevents my OS to drain  more battery and limits my user experience.

One of the many features I liked from the Samsung Galaxy S3 is definitely the Direct Call feature which Ninetology includes in their X1 as well. This feature allows you to directly call the person you are messaging with or their contacts displayed, just by bringing the phone to your ear without pressing anything. This feature surely helps a lot and until now, it is still a favourite feature of mine.

The lock screen for the Ninetology U9X1 seems to have several panels. I am not sure what it does at the moment as I was not given enough time to explore but it would be cool if at the end, you can add in different widgets for different lock screen.

Battery Life

Both have slightly similar battery power, the U9X1 with 2200 mAh and the S3 with 2100 mAh. Both phones could last me about a day which is good enough for the smartphones these days but the X1 lasted several hours more than the S3. I think it is due to the UI and battery life of the two devices.

Below are the specs for the Ninetology U9X1:

  • 1.2 GHz quad core processor
  • 4.8″ Super AMOLED HD
  • 4.2 Android Jelly Bean
  • 16 GB internal memory (expendable memory card microSD up to 32 GB)
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 13 MP Back Camera and 2MP HD Front Camera
  • 2,200 mAh battery
  • Price: RM1,099 (RRP)
  • Dual SIM card

The Samsung Galaxy S3 specs:

  • 1.4 GHz quad core processir
  • 4.8″ Super AMOLED HD
  • 4.2 Android Jelly Bean
  • 32 GB internal memore (expendable memore card micro SD up to 64 GB)
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 8 MP back camera and 1.9 front camera
  • 2100 mAh
  • Price: Around RM1599 for a new set

Specs wise, I would definitely say the S3 have a slight edge over the X1 besides the camera. I would go for a draw in this one but Ninetology certainly has its appeal with a slightly cheaper price range and a dual sim card function.

In the nutshell, I believe the Samsung Galaxy S3 have the edge over the Ninetology U9X1 but it all boils down to personal opinions and budget. I wouldn’t give my suggestion over which phone to buy but Ninetology phones have a series of affordable quad core phones which I believe will appeal to the public. Improving the camera quality and build quality will definitely do good to their business.

Basically the swipeable lock screen is actually useful since you can put lock screen widgets on it. Correct me if I'm wrong about that.

From a very long time Samsung has been making the most fascinating phones which are pretty much in the demand. The features in this phone are hard to seen in any other phone.
